The magnificent story of Jesus Christ revolves around Jesus' suffering on the cross and his death. It was "for us," in many ways. It shows us a God who forgives, who loves, and who suffers with us. The cross was not just a bump in the road on the way to resurrection; it was the climax of the story that the resurrection confirms. Because of the resurrection, the cross and death of Jesus become the very place where God's glory shines, and suffering is not the abandonment of God, but the place where God is found.
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. ~ 1 Peter 2:21
But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. ~ 1 Peter 4:13
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our suffering, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any suffering, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. ~ 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
